“Adam! Please let me have some chips! We’ve been walking for hours and I’m hungry!”
“Timothy, we need to save the food. Who knows how long we’re going to be out here...” “But I- look! A car!” Timothy abandoned his pleas to Adam for a few chips and ran to the side of the road, waving his arms.
A rusted blue van slowed to a stop, and tall, skinny man with balding brown hair and a long beard leaned out the window.
“Hey kids. D’ yea need a lift or somethin’?”
“Yea, we do! Where are you headed?”
“Aw, I dunno, wherever the road takes me...”
“Is there any chance that the road will take you to the nearest town?”
“Perhaps, we won’t know until we are there.”
“Good enough!” Timothy grinned and turned to face Adam. “C’mon Adam! He can take us to town!”
“He doesn’t sound to reliable to me... his voice is all slurred!”
“It’s better than nothing, I’m sure it’s just an accent.”
“Look at him! Does he even have a license?”
“Adam, not all grungy people can’t drive...”
“Name one who can!”
“Tons of them!”
“That’s not a proper name...”
“Whatever- get in the car!”
“...Fine! But if we go rolling off the road and die, it’s all your fault!”
“Ok, but we wont!”
They both climbed into the back of the van and sat on a box in the corner.
“Ok kids, hold on!”
The van zoomed away down the road.

“Hey mister, do I know you somehow? I think I might of seen you before...” Timothy asked the man.
“You might of, I wouldn’t know...”
“What’s your name?”
“D’pends on what you wanna call me.”
“Hmmm, in that case, your name must be... Joe!”
“Joe, huh. Well, alright. What’s your name?”
“Timothy!”
“I knew that!”
“You did?”
“Yea!”
“Since when?”
“Since when you said it!”
“Oh... you’re tricky!”
They continued talking for quite some time, Adam tried to block out their nonsense by staring out the window. It did no good.
“Hey Adam! Can we eat those chips now?”
“No, we might need them later.”
“Did somebody say chips?” Joe exclaimed and turned around to face the two boys, eyeing Adam excitedly.
“No! They’re for us and we have to save them for when we really need them!” Adam exclaimed and clutched the chips to his chest.
“But we aren’t going to need them now! Joe is taking us to town!” Timothy screached and lunged for them.
“Woa, little dudes, I never said for sure that I’m taking you to town. It depends on hos the road flows...” Joe said, with a dreamy look in his eyes.
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t here that...” Adam muttered, then slapped Timothy’s hand when he reached for the chips.
“Please! I want a chip! Just one stupid little chip!” Timothy wailed.
“No! We might need them! When we get back you can have all the chips you want, but until then we have to be sure that we don’t get in a situation...” Adam answered.
“What kind of chips are they?” Joe asked.
“The non-Joe flavor!” Adam exclaimed.
“Hey dude, I’m doing a nice thing for you, givin’ you a lift an’ all... and here you are, refusing to give me a chip!” Joe said in a hurt tone.
“Well... since you put it that way, here. You can have one.” Adam gave in and ripped open the bag. Chips flew everywhere, and Timothy lunged for them, squealing in delight. He gave Joe a handful, then shoved the rest into his mouth, saving three or so for Adam.
“Timothy! We could of saved those!” Adam yelled and tucked his three chips into his pocket.
“For when? We aren’t going to starve any time soon!”
“But... you never know! We might need them!”
“Whatever.”

The ride continued on in silence, and it was nearly dark when Joe slowed the van.
“Ok, little dudes! The road has abandoned me, and now the open fields are beckoning me to roam them. You want to stay on and explore uncharted lands with me?”
“Uh... what?” Timothy asked him, but Adam opened the door to the van and pulled Timothy out with him.
“Alright dudes, nice to hang with ya, and thanks for the chips!” Joe exclaimed and sped away down a hill next to the highway, leaving Timothy and Adam in the dark.
“Now do you see why I wanted to save those chips?” Adam demanded and stalked away angrily.
